Very Rich Hours in Chantilly

It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience: the chance to see one of the greatest -- and most fragile -- works of European art before your very eyes. The illustrated manuscript known as the  Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry contains images that have shaped our view of the late Middle Ages, but it's normally kept under lock and key at the Château de Chantilly, north of Paris. It's only been exhibited twice in the past century. Now newly restored, the glowing pages of  Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry are on show to the public for just a few months. "Approche, approche," the Duke of Berry's usher tells the visitors to the great man's table for the feast that will mark the start of the New Year. Opening and Closing in March

Impressionism shook up the world of art, but that was nothing compared to what followed. After Impressionism at the National Gallery in London, starting on March 25, aims to take us through the revolutionary period from around 1880 to the start of World War I, on to Expressionism, Cubism and Abstraction, with Cezanne, Gauguin, van Gogh, Klimt, Kokoschka, Matisse, Picasso, Kandinsky and Rodin; among more than 100 works, including loans from around Europe and the US, there'll also be unfamiliar artists like Broncia Koller-Pinell. However, if you're not quite ready for the Post-Impressionists just yet, how about the leading woman Impressionist, who's coming to Dulwich Picture Gallery on March 31?  Berthe Morisot: Shaping Impressionism  will include more than 30 of her works, nine of them from the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, as well as looking at how she drew inspiration from 18th-century paintings by the likes of Fragonard, Watteau, Gainsborough and Reyno...

Shock, Horror: Hogarth 'Not Politically Correct'

Hogarth and Europe : It's an intriguing-sounding exhibition at Tate Britain; the chance to see that great chronicler of 18th-century London life, William Hogarth, compared with his contemporaries in Paris, Venice and Amsterdam. Hogarth "was not alone," the Tate tells us on its website. "Across Europe, artists were creating vivid images of contemporary life and social commentary." So we went along in the expectation that we were going to see Hogarth's story-telling and insight reflected in similar scenes from across the continent.  Alas no. Somewhere between the conception and the execution, another idea seems to have taken hold. For one thing, few of the pictures on show here from French, Italian or Dutch artists are a patch on Hogarth, and they don't really live up to the billing of vivid social commentary. And there also appears to be a determined attempt to present Hogarth as an ingrained misogynist and racist, failing to live up to 21st-century value...

Opening in November

William Hogarth -- now there's a painter you think of as British through and through, flag-wavingly so. Just look at a painting such as  'O the Roast Beef of Old England' . So an exhibition entitled  Hogarth and Europe at Tate Britain in London has something of a curious ring to it. Starting on November 3, it aims to show how Hogarth's portrayal of a rapidly changing British society in the mid-18th century was echoed by painters on the Continent, such as Francesco Guardi in Venice, Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin in France and Cornelis Troost in Holland. Until March 20.  For an early pioneer of pan-European art, look no further than Albrecht Dürer. Dürer's Journeys: Travels of a Renaissance Artist at the National Gallery from November 20 follows the master painter from Nuremberg on his trips to the Low Countries and across the Alps, spreading his own reputation and exchanging ideas with his Dutch and Italian counterparts. What's On in 2021, Assuming Galleries Reopen....

So, 2021. What will we be able to see, where will be able to go? We're making no plans, but we're nevertheless looking forward to some interesting exhibitions across Britain and Europe in the coming 12 months. There are plenty of big names -- Botticelli, Rembrandt, Titian and Vermeer among them -- though with galleries closed yet again across much of the continent as 2020 ends and lockdowns tighten, we're only too aware of the huge coronavirus-shaped cloud of uncertainty hanging over the calendar.  Just under half of the 30 or so exhibitions we highlighted in our 2020 preview were either postponed till this year or later, if not cancelled altogether. In a spirit of vaccine-fuelled optimism and with fingers firmly crossed, here's a selection of key shows for your diary, in more or less chronological order. Opening and Closing in January

Pablo Picasso kicks off the exhibition year in London, with Picasso and Paper  at the Royal Academy bringing together more than 300 works from an 80-year career. Drawing, printmaking, collage and even paper sculpture all feature in this show, running from January 25 to April 13. Just outside the capital, we've enjoyed a couple of shows recently at the Lightbox in Woking, and their new exhibition is David Hockney: Ways of Working . It will look at how one of Britain's most popular artists has explored the possibilities of a wide range of media over 60 years. January 25 to April 19. Edward Hopper  is the subject of the first big show of the year at the Fondation Beyeler, just outside Basel. It will focus on Hopper's landscapes and cityscapes, and it's been put together with the Whitney Museum in New York, which holds the largest collection of his works. January 26 to May 17. Hogarth -- The Complete Box Sets Available Now!

We've all done it on a wet weekend, haven't we? Gorged ourselves on a box set, watching one episode after another after another, combining gluttony and indulgence, just two of the vices that the great storyteller of the Georgian age, William Hogarth, was able to illustrate so memorably, along with all their consequences. Hogarth was the master of the 18th-century equivalent of the box set, the moral tale told in a series of paintings or engravings, and in London this autumn you get the chance to enjoy the art equivalent of that Netflix or iPlayer binge. Go along to Sir John Soane's Museum to see, for the first time ever, all of Hogarth's series of pictures together on show in one place. Debauchery, infidelity, addiction, insanity, political chicanery: Hogarth: Place and Progress has got the lot. And, astonishingly at a time when exhibitions in London are getting more and more expensive, this opportunity to get this close up to the defining works of one of Britain...

The Show Won't Go On

Positively The Last Night but One, the advertisement warns. Your penultimate chance to see this New Grand Dramatic Oratorio. The Scenery entirely New, the Costumes and Decorations upon an unusually extensive Scale. The Band will be numerous and complete.  And, on account of the overwhelming clamour to see the show at the Theatre Royal Covent Garden, free admissions are suspended! That's bad news for ladies of the night, but at least they're still giving members of the press a complimentary ticket....  There's no business like show business. And it was ever thus, as we find out in Two Last Nights! Show Business in Georgian Britain at London's Foundling Museum, an exhibition that takes you back to the 18th and early 19th centuries to see what has changed about going to the theatre or a concert over 200 years, and what hasn't.  The hyperbole hasn't, clearly, though perhaps we're a bit less wordy.
